DESCRIPTION
I was commissioned to produce a pilot for an upcoming TV series, as a proof-of-concept to show potential investors what the show could actually look and feel like.

.

PROBLEM
The Producer was able to sell some potential investors on the idea, but they always came back saying they wanted to see something before backing it.

.

SOLUTION
I put together a skeleton crew, took them to Austin, Texas, and made something investors could see – and on a minimal budget.

METHODOLOGY
We shot on iPhones, using Moment‘s line of professional lenses and adapters. We recorded sound separately using a shotgun on a boom, fed into a Zoom H4n.

I had one cinematographer on interviews and the other on B-roll. We shot on two locations, capturing documentary-style footage of a photoshoot in each.

I used Premiere Pro to edit, Audition for sound mastering, and of course, LUTs were involved in the color grading process.

CRITIQUE
I would’ve liked to have done more neat transitions using the camera instead of the editing software. I had several ideas for transition material, but when shooting unscripted, you have to keep rolling on the subject, lest you miss something that only happens once.

Shooting on mobile allows some really neat maneuvers that just aren’t possible with cinema camera rigs, and I don’t think I tapped that potential, for fear that I’d miss something good while playing around with camerawork.
